“An Edo-style cultural hub featuring local cuisine, live samurai performances, and an interactive history museum directly below Kumamoto Castle.”

Sakura-no-baba Josaien was designed to recreate the lively jokamachi (castle town) of the Edo period. This place forms the cultural heart at the base of Kumamoto Castle. Its traditional wooden architecture and open courtyards create an immersive historical atmosphere, making it an ideal starting point before exploring the castle itself.

The complex consists of two main zones. Sakuramichi is a charming shopping and dining street with over 20 vendors offering Kumamoto’s famous “High Seven” local specialties, regional crafts, and traditional sweets. Wakuwaku Za is an interactive museum where history comes alive through multimedia, VR experiences showing the castle before the 1877 fire and the 2016 earthquake, and hands-on activities such as trying on samurai armor or kimono.

Throughout the day, visitors may encounter live entertainment in the courtyard, including performances by the Kumamoto Castle Omotenashi Bushotai, portraying real historical figures associated with the castle, as well as traditional shinobue (bamboo flute) and drum performances. During special events or cherry blossom season, the area is also illuminated at night, offering a particularly atmospheric experience.
