“Kumamoto’s liveliest pedestrian shopping arcade featuring over 170 shops, famous local cuisine, and nightlife that stays active well into the night.”
Shimotori Shopping Arcade (下通アーケード) is the beating heart of urban life in Kumamoto Prefecture and the city’s most prominent commercial street. Stretching over 511 meters in length and approximately 15 meters wide, the arcade is fully covered by a high arched glass roof, allowing visitors to shop comfortably regardless of weather conditions.
The arcade is home to around 170 shops, ranging from major department stores such as Tsuruya and modern shopping complexes like COCOSA, to popular discount retailers including Don Don Donki. Visitors will find fashion boutiques, cosmetics, electronics, souvenirs, and lifestyle shops, making it a comprehensive shopping destination for both locals and tourists.
Shimotori Shopping Arcade is also Kumamoto’s primary culinary hub. The area is renowned for local specialties such as basashi (fresh raw horse meat), Kumamoto ramen with its rich tonkotsu broth and roasted garlic oil (mayu), and Taipien, a regional glass-noodle soup influenced by Chinese cuisine. Numerous restaurants, cafés, dessert shops, and izakayas line the main arcade and branch into lively side streets.
Together with the neighboring Kamitori Shopping Arcade—known for its more relaxed and artsy atmosphere—Shimotori forms what locals commonly refer to as “Machi” (Town). Unlike many Japanese shopping streets that quiet down early, Shimotori remains vibrant late into the night, particularly around nearby areas such as West Ginza Street, which is packed with bars, karaoke venues, and nightlife spots. Seasonal events are frequently held within the arcade, including spring Hina doll displays and colorful autumn decorations.
