“Famous for its glowing golden ginkgo avenue in late November and the iconic Luffy bronze statue.”
The Kumamoto Prefectural Government Office is not only the administrative center of the prefecture but also a welcoming green public space in the heart of the city, seamlessly blending nature with modern pop culture. It has become one of Kumamoto’s most beloved seasonal attractions, especially during autumn.
The main highlight is the ginkgo tree avenue in front of the main building, where 54 ginkgo trees are planted in perfect symmetry. From mid to late November, the leaves turn a brilliant golden yellow, and in the evening, seasonal illumination lights transform the walkway into a warm, glowing tunnel—one of the most photogenic autumn scenes in Kumamoto.
Another major landmark is the Monkey D. Luffy statue, a bronze sculpture and the first statue created for the ONE PIECE Kumamoto Revival Project. The project symbolizes hope and reconstruction following the 2016 Kumamoto earthquake and was initiated by Eiichiro Oda, the creator of One Piece and a native of Kumamoto Prefecture.
While Kumamon Square, the official visitor-accessible office of Kumamon, is located in the city center, the prefectural government complex remains an important hub for Kumamoto’s public relations activities. Visitors will still find Kumamon statues and motifs throughout the grounds, adding a friendly and relaxed atmosphere similar to that of a city park.
