“A university-affiliated fragrance museum offering global perfume history, Japanese incense traditions, and highly sought-after perfume-making workshops.”

Oita Fragrance Museum, located in Japan’s hot-spring capital of Beppu, is internationally recognized for its specialized focus on the culture, science, and artistry of scent. Affiliated with Beppu University, the museum carries strong academic credibility, particularly in its technical and historical exhibitions.

  • The 1st floor introduces the modern fragrance world through the World Perfume Gallery, displaying thousands of iconic perfume bottles. The centerpiece is René Lalique’s legendary “Dans La Nuit” bottle from 1925. The Fragrance Factory section provides an in-depth look at scent production, showcasing steam distillation machinery and explaining the distinction between natural animal musks, such as civet and musk, and botanical extracts. This floor also features the FiFi Awards corner, often referred to as the “Oscars of Fragrance,” along with works by famed bottle designer Pierre Dinand.
  • The 2nd floor traces fragrance history across civilizations, from Ancient Egypt and Rome—where scent was used in religious rituals and daily life—to the elegance of European aristocracy. Period-specific rooms representing Rococo, Art Nouveau, and Art Deco illustrate how perfume bottle design evolved alongside major art movements. A highlight is the Japanese cultural section dedicated to Kodo (The Way of Incense), displaying rare Jinkoh (Agarwood) and the intricate tools used in traditional incense ceremonies.
  • The 3rd floor focuses on education and relaxation, featuring an interactive Aroma Room where visitors can experience a range of essential oils, as well as a curated library of rare fragrance-related literature.
