“This century-old mustard-yellow colonial-style building, distinguished by its arched doorways and windows crafted by Vietnamese artisans, reflects the glorious history and unique cultural heritage of the Tha Rae community in Sakon Nakhon.”

The Udom Dejwat Mansion, widely revered as the crown jewel of Tha Rae’s ancient houses, is more than just a historical structure; it is a monumental testament to architectural brilliance and cultural resilience in Northeastern Thailand. Commissioned in 1932 by Mr. Ong-Lueng Sorin, a prominent Christian merchant and patriarch of the Udomdetwat family, the mansion stands as a definitive example of French Colonial architecture seamlessly fused with Vietnamese craftsmanship. The structural marvel of this edifice lies in its load-bearing masonry walls, constructed using ancient techniques that rely on thick brickwork without the use of a single steel bar or concrete piling. Instead, a traditional mortar mixture of lime, sand, and local resin (Yang Bong) was utilized to create a structural integrity so profound that the building remains perfectly stable after over 90 years of exposure to the tropical elements.

The historical significance of the mansion is further height_ened by the extraordinary logistics of its construction. Almost all interior luxuries, including French oak furniture, crystal chandeliers, and decorative tiles, were imported directly from France. These goods traveled by sea to the Port of Bangkok, then by rail to Nakhon Ratchasima, before enduring a grueling months-long journey via ox-cart caravans through dense jungles and rugged terrains to reach the remote village of Tha Rae. Architectural enthusiasts will be captivated by the exquisite stucco moldings adorning the arched doorways and windows, displaying a Western artistic influence that was exceptionally rare for the period. Today, the ground floor has been masterfully transformed into a café, serving as a living museum where visitors can immerse themselves in the nostalgic atmosphere of a bygone era. This restoration ensures that the mansion continues to function not just as a relic, but as a vibrant cultural hub that tells the enduring story of the Tha Rae community’s golden heritage.

How to Get There
  • From Sakon Nakhon city center, take Highway 22 (Sakon Nakhon-Nakhon Phanom) and drive straight for approximately 21 kilometers. Upon reaching the Tha Rae intersection, turn right into the Tha Rae village community. The mansion is located on Rat Charoen Road (the main road of the ancient village). Parking is available along the roadside in front of the mansion.
