“Thailand's largest lotus park, located near Nong Han Lake, is a collection of over a hundred varieties of lotus, both domestic and international, featuring a long red wooden bridge across the lake and an exquisite white Naga sculpture.”

The Lotus Park is widely recognized as a "hidden gem" of Sakon Nakhon province, situated within the expansive grounds of Kasetsart University, Chalermphrakiat Sakon Nakhon Province Campus. It was established to honor King Bhumibol Adulyadej the Great on his 84th birthday anniversary. This site is far more than just a public park; it stands as the largest lotus variety center in Thailand, meticulously curated to house hundreds of indigenous and international lotus species. Spanning over 10 rai of land adjacent to the legendary Nong Han Lake, the park benefits from a unique microclimate that keeps the area lush, humid, and refreshingly cool throughout the year.

The landscape design offers a sensory journey through various aquatic zones. The most iconic feature is the long red wooden bridge that snakes across the vast lotus ponds, allowing visitors to walk directly into the heart of the blooms. As you traverse this path, you are surrounded by a sea of vibrant pink, white, and purple flowers contrasting beautifully against the emerald green pads. Adding to the spiritual and visual grandeur is the majestic white Naga sculpture (Great Serpent), which stands proudly by the water's edge. This striking monument represents the deep-seated faith and cultural mythology of the Mekong region, making it a primary landmark for photography and reflection.

Beyond its aesthetic appeal, the park serves as a vital living laboratory and national research hub. It features an exhibition building dedicated to botanical education, detailing the life cycle of lotuses, species classification, and their cultural significance in Thai heritage. Visitors can observe the distinct characteristics of sacred lotus, water lilies, and rare ornamental hybrids that are seldom seen elsewhere. The tranquil atmosphere, complemented by the gentle breeze from Nong Han Lake, makes this park an ideal destination for those seeking nature therapy, ecological learning, or a peaceful escape into Thailand's rural beauty.

How to Get There
  • Private car: From Sakon Nakhon city center, take Highway 22 (Sakon Nakhon-Nakhon Phanom route) for approximately 19-20 kilometers. After passing the turnoff to Kasetsart University, continue for about 2 kilometers. The entrance to the national park will be on your left.

  • Public transport: You can take a Sakon Nakhon-Tha Rae shared taxi or a Bangkok-Nakhon Phanom bus and get off at the national park entrance.

Travel Tips
  • Best Time to Visit: Arrive at the park in the morning when most of the lotus flowers are in full bloom and the weather is not yet too hot.

  • Clothing: Bright or vibrant colors (such as white, yellow, or red) are recommended to create a beautiful contrast with the green lotus leaves and the brown wooden bridge in photos.

  • Sun Protection: Since much of the area is open and surrounded by water, bring an umbrella, hat, or sunglasses, and apply sunscreen. The sun gets quite strong later in the day.

  • Recommended Activities: Besides walking on the wooden bridge, rent a bicycle and cycle around the park to enjoy the scenery of the adjacent Nong Han Lake. This will provide a refreshing breeze and a wider perspective.

  • Photographing the Naga Statue: For photos of the white Naga statue, use an upward or wide-angle shot to capture the grandeur of the sculpture against the backdrop of the lotus pond and sky.

  • Family Preparation: If bringing elderly people or young children, exercise caution while walking on the wooden bridge and take breaks at the designated pavilions to prevent sunstroke.

  • Maintaining Cleanliness: As this is a research area for the university, please help maintain cleanliness. Do not litter in the lotus pond, and absolutely do not pick the lotus flowers.

  • Tourist connecting point: You can continue your trip to Tha Rae or visit Phra That Choeng Chum in the city afterwards, as they are not far apart.
