“Admire the beauty of the "Ancient Stone Building," a French-Vietnamese-style brick and mortar structure. It stands out for its use of sandstone and mortar combined with local craftsmanship, resulting in a strong, durable structure with unique artistic features rarely seen in Northeastern Thailand.”

The community of Ban Tha Rae is not only renowned for having one of the most organized urban layouts in Northeastern Thailand but also serves as the home to the Ancient Stone Buildings of Tha Rae. This historic structure acts as a living museum, narrating the profound history of Vietnamese and French Christian migrants who settled in the region. Built around 1932, the mansion was crafted by skilled Vietnamese artisans who masterfully integrated Western architectural principles with local craftsmanship, resulting in a rare and stunning Colonial-style architecture that remains a cornerstone of Sakon Nakhon’s heritage.

What sets this building apart is its traditional construction technique, which predates the widespread use of modern cement. The walls were constructed using a meticulous combination of sandstone and kiln-fired bricks, bonded together by a specialized ancient mortar—a unique mixture of lime, sand, sugarcane juice, and "Yang Bong" (a local tree resin). This ingenious blend has allowed the structure to withstand the test of time for nearly a century. The architectural silhouette is defined by its elegant arched windows and doorways, reflecting classic European tastes, while the delicate stuccowork above the frames showcases a harmonious blend of French artistic flair and Oriental subtleness.

Although time has weathered the exterior, leaving behind exposed reddish-orange brickwork and the raw, stoic texture of sandstone, the building has evolved into a powerful artistic landmark. Its "ruin-chic" aesthetic offers a hauntingly beautiful atmosphere that seems to freeze time, making it a sanctuary for photographers and history enthusiasts alike. Exploring these grounds is more than just a sightseeing tour; it is an immersion into the legacy of the pioneering families who flourished in trade and played a pivotal role in establishing Tha Rae’s economic foundation. Today, the building stands as a silent witness to the resilient Catholic faith and vibrant cultural identity that continue to define this unique community.
