“Explore Kumamoto Castle’s past through VR exhibits, a detailed post-earthquake restoration exhibition, and samurai costume experiences within Sakuranobaba Josaien.”

Kumamoto Castle Museum Wakuwakuza is an experience-based museum located at the foot of Kumamoto Castle, within the cultural tourism district of Sakuranobaba Josaien. The word “Wakuwaku” in Japanese means excitement, perfectly reflecting the museum’s engaging and family-friendly approach to history.

The museum presents the story of Kumamoto Castle from the Edo period to modern times, covering the rule of the Kato and Hosokawa clans, key historical events such as the Satsuma Rebellion, and the extensive damage caused by the 2016 earthquake. History is conveyed through easy-to-understand VR experiences, projection mapping, and theatrical storytelling.

A major highlight not to be missed is the “Kumamoto Castle Restoration” exhibition on the 2nd floor, which explains in detail the long and complex restoration process following the earthquake. Special attention is given to the reconstruction of the famous stone walls using the Musha-gaeshi technique, illustrating why the restoration requires highly specialized craftsmanship and takes decades to complete. This section is especially rewarding for visitors interested in architecture and heritage conservation.

Additional attractions include samurai, ninja, and princess costume experiences, a large-scale LEGO model of Kumamoto Castle built from over 75,000 bricks, hands-on activities such as sitting in a traditional palanquin, and a small theater featuring live performances that bring historical narratives to life. Wakuwakuza serves as an ideal introduction before visiting the actual castle grounds.
