“A nostalgic 1957 amusement park where toddlers and young children can enjoy over 20 gentle rides—including Thomas the Tank Engine attractions—surrounded by shrine forests and seasonal blossoms.”
Dazaifu Amusement Park is a cherished “retro” theme park that has welcomed generations of families since its opening in 1957. Unlike modern, high-adrenaline amusement parks, it preserves the gentle charm of Japan’s Showa era, featuring pastel-colored mechanical rides, classic designs, and a relaxed pace that feels like stepping back into mid-20th-century Japan.
The park is specifically designed for toddlers and elementary school children, and it is one of the few amusement parks in Japan where children as young as three years old can enjoy nearly all of its 20+ attractions. Popular highlights include the Elephant “Madmouse” Coaster—a perfect first rollercoaster—the pedal-powered Cycle Monorail offering elevated views of the shrine’s greenery, and miniature train rides winding through shaded woodland paths.
A major hidden highlight is its licensed character attractions, especially Thomas the Tank Engine and Friends, which are extremely popular with Japanese toddlers and preschoolers. Combined with its peaceful forest setting behind Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine, the park becomes especially magical during seasonal blooms—plum blossoms in late winter, cherry blossoms in spring, and irises in early summer near the adjacent ponds.
How to Get There
-
By Train: Take the Nishitetsu Line to Dazaifu Station, then walk approximately 10 minutes along the lively shrine street (Dazaifu Sando).
-
The Scenic Route: After visiting the main hall of Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine, follow signs toward the rear/right side of the shrine grounds leading uphill to the park.
-
Museum Shortcut (Hidden Gem): If coming from the Kyushu National Museum, use the “Rainbow Tunnel” (moving walkway/escalator), which brings you out very close to the amusement park entrance and avoids walking through the entire shrine complex.
