“A nationally protected historic warehouse street where you can hear the bell tower ring four times daily and visit a uniquely designed Starbucks blending into Edo-style architecture.”

Ichibangai Street is the most famous historic district in Kawagoe and the symbolic center of “Little Edo.” The street is lined with traditional “Kurazukuri” warehouse buildings constructed after the Great Fire of 1893. These structures were designed with thick plaster-coated earthen walls, dark tones, and heavy tiled roofs to prevent fire damage.

The area has been officially designated as an Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings, recognizing its exceptional historical and architectural value in Japan.

Today, many of these former warehouses have been transformed into souvenir shops, sweet stores, cafés, and small museums. One of the most popular photo spots is Starbucks Kawagoe Kanetsuki-dori, specially designed to harmonize with the historic streetscape.

Nearby stands Kawagoe’s iconic landmark, Toki no Kane (the “Bell of Time”), which still rings four times daily at 06:00, 12:00, 15:00, and 18:00 — a practical and memorable experience for visitors who plan their timing accordingly.
