“A magnificent black-walled Kurazukuri building at Nakamachi intersection, famous for its rare Hakomune box ridge roof resembling snake scales.”
Matsuzaki House was built in 1901 (Meiji 34) by Matsuzaki Tokujiro II, a prosperous sugar wholesaler operating under the trade name “Matsuzaki-ya.” The building reflects Kawagoe’s commercial prosperity during the Meiji era and remains one of the finest surviving merchant houses in the city.
Architecturally, it is an outstanding example of Kurazukuri (Misegura) — a fireproof storehouse-style shop that became widespread after the Great Kawagoe Fire of 1893. The exterior walls are finished in deep black plaster (Kuro-shikkui), applied thickly for fire protection while giving the building its dignified and imposing appearance. The windows feature heavy copper-plated double doors (Kannon-biraki), painted black to harmonize with the facade.
The most distinctive feature is its Hakomune (box ridge) roof, with a textured surface resembling snake scales — a rare and refined craftsmanship detail that sets this building apart from other Kurazukuri structures in the district.
Today, the front portion of the building operates as “Matsuzaki Sports,” a local sporting goods shop specializing in baseball equipment. Despite the change in business, the structure has been remarkably preserved and is officially designated as a Tangible Cultural Property by Kawagoe City.
