Khmer Shrines

Typically, "Khmer shrines" were built according to cosmological beliefs, with the prang representing Mount Meru, the center of the universe. The primary construction materials were laterite and brick, featuring carved sandstone lintels depicting stories of gods and significant events. The layout was usually situated on a high base with a main entrance from the east to catch the morning sun, following ancient traditions. Lopburi houses several important shrines, such as "Prang Khaek" and "Phra Prang Sam Yot," which were originally built for Brahman deities. These architectural marvels are noted for their sturdy forms and intricate stucco patterns reflecting supreme faith.
