“Explore vast savanna grasslands that change colors seasonally, marvel at Kaeng Sopha Waterfall, known as the “Niagara of Thailand,” and enjoy the cool climate at Thung Nang Phaya and Nong Mae Na, popular camping spots.”

Thung Salaeng Luang National Park covers a vast area of approximately 789,000 rai, spanning Wang Thong and Nakhon Thai in Phitsanulok, as well as Lom Sak, Mueang, and Chon Daen in Phetchabun. It was officially established as a national park on May 27, 1975. The park headquarters is located at kilometer 80 along Highway No. 12 (Phitsanulok–Lom Sak). The landscape consists of complex mountain ranges and serves as the source of many streams flowing into the Nan River.

The park’s unique identity lies in its rare “savanna grasslands mixed with pine forests”, especially around Thung Salaeng Luang, Nong Mae Na, and Thung Nang Phaya. These wide-open grass fields stretch as far as the eye can see, beautifully contrasted by lines of two-needle pine trees. Wildlife can occasionally be spotted, along with a variety of seasonal wildflowers that enhance the natural scenery.

Another must-visit destination is Thung Nang Phaya, a grassland surrounded by pine forests, dry evergreen forests, and deciduous dipterocarp forests. It is ideal for camping with a raw, untouched natural atmosphere. During winter, the area is often covered in mist, creating a peaceful and scenic environment.

Key attractions within the park include:

  • Kaeng Sopha Waterfall: A large multi-tiered waterfall formed by Huai Khek Yai stream, cascading down rock layers in approximately three levels

  • Thung Salaeng Luang: Expansive savanna grassland where wildlife can be seen; ideal for trekking and camping

  • Thung Nang Phaya: A scenic grassland surrounded by pine forests; popular for camping with beautiful mist in winter

  • Kaeng Wang Nam Yen: A long rocky rapid stretching hundreds of meters with deep pools between sections, surrounded by diverse forest types and rich wildlife

  • Tham Duean–Tham Dao (Moon & Star Caves): Large cave chambers featuring stalactites, stalagmites, and an underground stream

For adventure seekers, additional exploration sites include:

  • Khao Ban Mung Cave Area: Accessible via a 25 km dirt road from the park headquarters, followed by a 15 km trek

  • Pha Daeng (Red Cliff): Dramatic limestone mountains with striking formations and hidden caves

  • Tham Phra Ban Wang Daeng: Located in Chomphu, Noen Maprang; requires a 2 km hike and offers a challenging yet rewarding experience

How to Get There
  • By car: From Phitsanulok city, take Highway No. 12 (Phitsanulok–Lom Sak) to kilometer 80, where the park headquarters (Kaeng Sopha zone) is located

  • To Nong Mae Na zone: Continue on Highway No. 12, then turn onto Highway No. 2258 (Khaem Son junction) toward Khao Kho–Nong Mae Na
