“Legendary moss garden with over 120 moss species, a heart-shaped pond, and Shakyo activities offering a deep meditative experience.”

Saiho-ji is one of the 17 Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto inscribed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. Its moss garden is among the most famous in the world, designed by Muso Soseki, the most influential Zen master and garden designer in Japanese history. The garden was carefully created rather than forming naturally, turning the historic temple into a jewel for spiritual practice.

The garden is divided into two levels: the lower garden features lush moss surrounding a pond shaped like the Chinese character “heart” (心), reflecting traditional water garden design. The upper garden is a pioneering dry rock garden (Karesansui), which became a model for later Zen gardens using rocks to represent mountains and water.

The moss here is more than just beautiful. Over 120 species range from deep green to gold-green, emerald, and olive tones, shifting subtly with sunlight filtering through the trees. After periods of abandonment post-war, the moss grew naturally in the humid Arashiyama valley, embodying Wabi-Sabi, the beauty of impermanence and nature.

The Shakyo activity is more than a ritual—it is a “gateway” to Zen. In the wooden hall scented with incense and Chinese ink, visitors copy characters from the “Heart Sutra” (Prajnaparamita Hridaya Sutra). Most of the time, this is done in the hall, but in some periods, visitors may instead write prayers on Goma wood or choose their own preferred method. Completed papers or wooden prayers are offered at the main altar as a sign of respect and meditation before entering the moss garden.

While the rainy season (June–July) is considered the most beautiful, other seasons offer unique charms:

  • Autumn (November): Red maple leaves fall onto the green moss, creating a picture-perfect contrast.

  • Winter: Snow resting on the moss adds a quiet, solemn atmosphere.

Visiting requires advance reservation, usually 1–2 months ahead via the temple’s online system, especially during high season. Visitors should wear modest, comfortable clothing and clean socks for walking on wooden floors, and maintain quiet to respect the meditative atmosphere. For those unable to sit in the traditional kneeling posture (Seiza), tables and chairs are available upon request. Some areas have no trash bins, so carrying a small waste bag is recommended. Total visit duration, including the activity and garden walk, is approximately 1–2 hours. Photography is allowed only in the garden (no flash or tripods allowed).

How to Get There
  • From Kyoto Station, take Kyoto City Bus #73 to Kokedera Suzumushidera stop, then walk 3–5 minutes to the temple.
