“Treeless rolling hills covered in seasonal grass, offering panoramic 360° views—perfect for photography and sunset watching.”

Phu Khao Ya, locally known as “Bald Hill,” is one of the most distinctive landscapes in southern Thailand and a key landmark of Ranong Province. It features a series of gently rolling hills that stretch continuously across the area, almost entirely free of large trees.

What makes Phu Khao Ya unique is its open, treeless terrain covered only with short grass. This unusual characteristic is the result of several natural factors working together, including shallow and nutrient-poor soil, heavy rainfall that causes soil erosion, and strong winds that make it difficult for large trees to grow. These conditions prevent permanent vegetation from taking root, creating a rare “grass-covered mountain” landscape that is uncommon in Thailand.

The charm of Phu Khao Ya lies in the smooth, flowing curves of its hills. With no visual obstructions, the terrain creates beautiful layers of light and shadow throughout the day. This is especially stunning during the golden hour, when sunlight softly sweeps across the ridgelines, enhancing the natural contours of the hills.

Visitors can easily hike to the top via a short trail that takes about 10–20 minutes. From the summit, you’ll be rewarded with a 360-degree panoramic view, overlooking surrounding mountain ranges, the nearby Namtok Ngao National Park, and the Phetkasem Road that runs along the front of the area.

Seasonal Color Transformation

One of the most fascinating features of Phu Khao Ya is how the landscape changes color throughout the year:

  • Rainy Season (May – October):
The hills turn lush green, resembling a vast natural carpet or a giant golf course.

  • Cool & Dry Season (November – April):
The grass shifts to golden-yellow and light brown tones, creating a savanna-like atmosphere with a completely different visual mood.

This seasonal transformation allows the same location to offer dramatically different aesthetics, making it especially appealing for photographers and nature lovers seeking variety in their shots.

How to Get There
