“The wooden replica of Rattana Rangsan Castle shows 6 bedrooms of the King Rama V, the pictures of Ranong in the old days as well as the household utensils.”
Rattanarangsan Palace (Replica), is located at the foot of Rattanarangsan Hill near Ranong City Hall, in Khao Niwet Subdistrict, Mueang Ranong District, Ranong Province. The palace was built as a memorial to commemorate the royal visits and overnight stays of three Thai monarchs in Ranong.
Historical Background
The story of Rattanarangsan Palace dates back to 1890 (B.E. 2433), when King Chulalongkorn (Rama V) traveled to the western southern region of Thailand and visited Ranong for the first time. To the King, Phraya Rattanasethi (Khaw Sim Kong) constructed a royal residence on a hill in the center of the town using strong hardwood materials, intending it as a royal offering.
Impressed by the beauty and strength of the building, the King remarked that it was more suitable to be called a palace rather than a pavilion. He then graciously bestowed the name “Rattanarangsan Palace” in honor of Ranong and the Rattanasethi family.
Since royal visits to Ranong were rare, the King later permitted the building to be used as a government hall for official ceremonies and local administration. Over time, the original structure deteriorated and was eventually modified into a building that served as the provincial hall.
Later, King Vajiravudh (Rama VI) and King Prajadhipok (Rama VII) also stayed at the newer residence.
In 2002 (B.E. 2545), Ranong Province initiated the reconstruction of a replica near the original site to preserve its historical significance and promote tourism.
On June 24, 2004, it was officially named “Rattanarangsan Palace (Replica)”, although it may also be referred to as the Rattanarangsan Throne Hall Replica, since a throne hall is part of a royal palace complex.
