“Suan Phueng is notable for its sheep farms, European-style cafes, Bo Khlong Hot Springs, and the sea of mist at Khao Krajom.”
Suan Phueng District is a district of Ratchaburi Province, a land of Mae Klong River culture and mist of the Tenasserim Hills. It is located on the western side of Ratchaburi Province, adjacent to the Tenasserim Hills, which form the natural border between Thailand and Myanmar. The landscape of Suan Phueng varies from the fertile lowlands of the Mae Klong River, where crops and fruits are grown, to the complex mountain ranges along the western border.
Due to its mountainous terrain filled with forests and natural streams, Suan Phueng enjoys cooler weather than the surrounding plains, especially during the rainy and winter seasons, making it a popular getaway for tourists seeking a retreat close to Bangkok to enjoy nature and fresh air all year round.
The Slogan Reflecting Suan Phueng's Character
Suan Phueng's slogan that reflects the identity and charm of the area is:
"Karen girls alongside Tenasserim, Lam Phachi, Kaeng Som Maeo cliff line, Bo Khlong hot springs that captivate, Wild honey that captivates the heart"
This slogan reflects the way of life of the Karen community, the rich nature, the Phachi River, natural tourist attractions, and the reputation of wild honey as a local specialty.
A Brief History of Suan Phueng District
Suan Phueng was originally a subdistrict of Chom Bueng District, covering a vast area filled with forests and mountains. Travel was formerly difficult and rugged, with most residents being Karen-descended Thais living along mountains and natural streams.
The government later moved in a mobile development unit on March 20, 1968, focusing on transportation, infrastructure, and citizens' quality of life, which enhanced the area's development.
Subsequently, on November 15, 1974, the Ministry of Interior announced the division of part of Chom Bueng District to establish Suan Phueng Subdistrict, and later on April 1, 1983, it was formally designated as Suan Phueng District.
A Resort Town with European Atmosphere
This area originally was an agriculture and mining community before gradually becoming a nature and lifestyle tourism town. Highlights include a blend of nature and European-style architecture, with resorts, cafes, and attractions inspired by Mediterranean, English, and Swiss rural styles, giving Suan Phueng a unique ambiance compared to other Thai attractions, earning it the nickname "Switzerland of Thailand".
Popular Sheep Farms, Cafes, and Activities
One popular activity is visiting sheep farms and animal farms like The Scenery Vintage Farm and Alpaca Hill, letting tourists feed animals, take photos, and experience a European farm atmosphere up close. Numerous beautifully decorated cafes are also spread across the district, ideal for photography enthusiasts and those wishing to relax amid nature.
Natural Attractions, Waterfalls, and Hot Springs
For those who love nature and adventure, Suan Phueng offers several intriguing attractions, such as Bo Khlong Hot Springs, a natural hot spring emerging from the earth amidst the forest, ideal for relaxation, and Kaew Chan Waterfall, also known as “Nine-Level Waterfall”, providing a short hiking trail for a close nature encounter.
Khao Krajom, a Famous Sea of Mist Viewpoint
Another key highlight is Khao Krajom, a popular viewing point on Thailand's western border during wintertime. Visitors can take a four-wheel drive up to the summit to see the sea of mist, sunrise, and complex mountain views extending into Myanmar, making it one of the most scenic mist viewing spots in the west.
Arts, Local Lifestyles, and Souvenirs
Besides nature, Suan Phueng offers cultural and art-centered attractions such as Hom Tean Village, featuring handmade crafts, scented candles, and artsy-style shops, as well as local markets selling community products, souvenirs, and Ratchaburi local food, allowing tourists to experience the simple life of local residents.
