“Pay respect to the Black Stone Buddha (Phra Rod Luang) linked to Queen Chamadevi, admire the Hariphunchai-style Mahawan Chedi, and visit the legendary origin site of Phra Rod, one of Thailand’s five greatest Benjapakee amulets.”

Wat Mahawan Wanaram is an important ancient temple located near the western moat of Lamphun. It was built around 1200 BE (7th century) during the reign of Queen Chamadevi, the first ruler of the Hariphunchai Kingdom, after she journeyed from the Lavo Kingdom to establish her rule. She brought skilled followers, over 500 monks, and sacred Buddha images with her.

Among these sacred images were Phra Kaew Khao (Setang Kamani) and Phra Phuttha Sikkhi, also known as the Black Stone Buddha. The queen ordered the construction of Wat Mahawan as a monastery for monks from Lavo and as the place to enshrine the Black Stone Buddha. The White Crystal Buddha was later taken by King Mengrai to Chiang Mai and is now housed at Wat Chiang Man.

The temple’s most sacred object is the Black Stone Buddha, a naga-protected Buddha image in Dvaravati–Lopburi art style. It is believed to possess strong spiritual power and served as the model for creating the famous Phra Rod clay amulets.

According to legend, during a war between Hariphunchai and the Lua chieftain Wilangka, hermits used the Black Stone Buddha as a prototype to create protective amulets for soldiers and citizens. The remaining amulets were later stored inside the Mahawan Chedi, an ancient Hariphunchai-style pagoda.

Centuries later, when the chedi partially collapsed, many amulets were discovered. Locals who kept them reported miraculous protection, leading these amulets to become widely known as “Phra Rod Mahawan”, now regarded as one of Thailand’s most prestigious Benjapakee (Five Legendary Amulets).

Today, the temple remains a major spiritual landmark and historical site in Lamphun, attracting worshippers, history enthusiasts, and amulet collectors seeking blessings for protection, safety, and success.
