“Visit an archaeological excavation site displaying remarkably well-preserved prehistoric human skeletons, and learn about the lifestyle, burial practices, and culture of an ancient community that once flourished on a large earthen mound (non) surrounded by a double-layered moat and earthen embankment.”

The Non Muang Ancient Town, often referred to locally as "Ku Non Muang," is a premier archaeological landmark in Khon Kaen Province. It is a classic example of a "moated site," situated on a high, teardrop-shaped oval mound. This vast area represents a significant ancient settlement that witnessed continuous social and cultural evolution over millennia. The site is uniquely distinguished by its multi-layered stratigraphy, which chronicles human occupation beginning in the Late Prehistoric period. The most compelling evidence of this era is the "mortuary tradition"; archaeologists have unearthed a vast number of human remains buried with meticulous care and specific orientations. Notably, the discovery of "jar burials" for infants suggests a highly sophisticated belief system concerning the afterlife and the cycle of rebirth.

In terms of ancient economy and technology, the artifacts recovered indicate that the people of Non Muang were master metallurgists, particularly in iron smelting. The presence of iron slag scattered throughout the site proves that it once served as a regional industrial hub. Furthermore, the discovery of ornaments crafted from semi-precious stones, glass beads, and seashell bangles—items that originated from coastal regions—demonstrates that Non Muang was a pivotal trading hub. It served as a vital link in a trade network connecting the basins of the Pong and Chi Rivers with distant civilizations. The local pottery, known as "Non Muang Style," is characterized by its fine clay, high-fire durability, and intricate red-painted geometric or curvilinear designs, showcasing an advanced aesthetic sensibility.

During the transition into the Dvaravati period, Non Muang ascended to become a major religious and administrative center. Upper stratigraphic layers reveal the foundations of religious structures built from laterite and brick. Significant finds include massive sandstone "Bai Sema" (boundary stones) intricately carved with scenes from the Jataka tales and symbols like the "Purnaghata" (the vase of plenty), reflecting an artistic synthesis of local styles and Indian influence. Today, the site has been meticulously preserved as one of the most comprehensive site museums in Northeast Thailand. Five major excavation pits have been developed to display skeletons and artifacts "in situ," offering visitors a rare and profound opportunity to witness the grandeur of an ancient civilization that laid the cultural foundations of the Isan region thousands of years ago.
