“Thailand’s largest rock-fill dam featuring stunning reservoir views, a memorial park with a giant sundial, and breathtaking sunsets, serving as a premier hub for houseboat relaxation.”

Srinakarin Dam is a large multi-purpose dam built to block the Khwae Noi River in Tha Kradan Subdistrict, Si Sawat District, Kanchanaburi Province. Originally named "Chao Noen Dam," it was later renamed "Srinakarin Dam" in honor of Her Majesty Queen Sri Savangavadhana. This dam is a key project under Thailand's Mae Klong River Basin Development Plan, with primary objectives of hydroelectric power generation, agricultural water management, flood mitigation, and water resource management in the western part of the country. Construction began in 1973 and was completed in 1980, officially opening in 1981. It is currently under the management of the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT).

The Srinakarin Dam is a massive rockfill dam with a clay core, standing approximately 140 meters high from its foundation, with a crest length of about 610 meters. It houses a large reservoir covering an area of approximately 419 square kilometers, capable of storing over 17 billion cubic meters of water. Srinakarin Dam is considered the largest rockfill dam with a clay core in Thailand. The dam's hydroelectric power plant has a total generating capacity of approximately 720 megawatts, utilizing both conventional generators and a pumped-storage system to manage electricity supply during periods of high and low demand.

Beyond its energy and irrigation roles, Srinakarin Dam has also become one of Kanchanaburi's most famous natural tourist attractions. Its large reservoir, surrounded by limestone mountains and natural forests, offers a tranquil atmosphere and beautiful scenery year-round. The dam crest is a popular viewpoint for watching sunrises and sunsets, especially during the winter months when mist often floats over the water, creating a stunning ambiance reminiscent of a lake in the mountains. Additionally, there is the "Memory Garden," a large, beautifully landscaped recreational park featuring sculptures, a sundial, and relaxing areas along the reservoir.

The area around Srinakarin Dam is also a hub for Kanchanaburi's renowned floating resorts and water activities. Numerous floating resorts are scattered along the reservoir, offering tourists opportunities to relax in nature, swim, kayak, raft, or enjoy close-up views of the rolling hills reflected in the water. Many offer water sports and family-friendly recreational activities, making the area popular with both Thai and international tourists. Especially for those seeking to escape the hustle and bustle of big cities and experience nature in its truest form.

Another significant highlight of Srinakarin Dam is its location near several famous natural attractions, such as Erawan Waterfall, Huai Mae Khamin Waterfall, Phra That Cave, and nature trails within Srinakarin National Park. Most tourists plan 2-3 day trips to stay in floating bungalows on the reservoir and easily access nearby attractions. The route from Kanchanaburi city to the dam is relatively convenient, with paved roads all the way, and accessible by both private cars and public buses. This makes Srinakarin Dam both a vital energy source and one of the most prominent natural tourism destinations in western Thailand.
