“Learn about the royal history through 8 exhibition rooms, admire seasonal flower gardens, visit the Princess Mother’s first home, and pay respects to the Buddha’s left collarbone relic.”
Doi Tung Royal Villa began in 1988 under the royal initiative of Princess Srinagarindra (the Princess Mother). She wished for a residence to closely oversee the development of the Doi Tung area. Her famous remark, "I will plant a forest on Doi Tung," led to the construction of this simple villa as a hub for transforming bald mountains into lush forests and sustainably improving the quality of life for local hill tribe communities. The interior of the Royal Villa is divided into 4 main sections:
The Hall of Inspiration
- Located at the very front before entering the villa, it was built in 2003 to honor the Princess Mother. It is divided into 8 exhibition rooms that detail her life story from her childhood and years living abroad to her royal duties in developing Doi Tung. A walk through this hall helps visitors understand her determination and the inspiration behind the great transformation of this land.
- A temperate flower garden covering 25 rai (approx. 10 acres) situated directly in front of the villa. The highlight is the exquisite arrangement of temperate plants and flowers that rotate every season, ensuring a beautiful and unique atmosphere all year round. The garden also features the "Continuity" sculpture at its center, a popular spot for tourists to take photos and soak in the peaceful ambiance.
The Doi Tung Royal Villa Building
- Considered the Princess Mother’s first home on this high mountain, the architecture beautifully blends local Lanna art with Swiss Chalet style. The interior reflects a simple yet elegant lifestyle. A particularly impressive detail is the ceiling of the main hall, which is carved into the constellation map of the Princess Mother’s birth date, showcasing delicate craftsmanship and a true love for nature and design.
- Located at the highest peak and the most important religious site in Chiang Rai. The golden pagoda enshrines the Buddha’s left collarbone relic, which was brought from India. Locals and tourists alike travel here to pay respects for good fortune. It is believed to be the pilgrimage site for those born in the Year of the Horse, making it an essential spiritual landmark to visit when coming to Doi Tung.
