“Wat Thai Kusinara Chalermraj stands out with its Mahathat Chedi (Great Relic Pagoda) blending Thai and Indian art, its beautiful Ubosot (ordination hall), and a peaceful, serene atmosphere. Located just 1 kilometer from the Mahaparinirvana site, it is ideal for pilgrimage and Dharma practice.”
Wat Thai Kusinara Chalermraj is situated on an area of approximately 14 rai (5.6 acres) in Kushinagar, Uttar Pradesh, India. Its location is strategically significant, lying between Salavanodaya (the site of the Buddha's Parinirvana) and Makutabandhana Stupa (the cremation site of the Buddha's physical remains), both just about 1 kilometer away. This makes the temple a central point for Buddhist pilgrimages following in the footsteps of the Buddha, conveniently connecting the important route of the “Four Great Pilgrimage Sites” (Sanghveniya Sathan).
Construction of the temple began in 1994, through the collective efforts of Thai Buddhists, as an act of veneration to the Buddha and to commemorate significant occasions for His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej (Rama IX), including his 50th year of reign and his 6th cycle (72nd) birthday, in the land of the Buddha's enlightenment. His Majesty graciously bestowed the name “Wat Thai Kusinara Chalermraj” upon the temple, bringing great auspiciousness to the Thai people.
His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej also granted the name of the principal Buddha image in the Ubosot as “Phra Phuttha Sayamphu Yann”. Additionally, he bestowed important sacred items, including a royal photograph of His Majesty during his ordination, a three-tiered umbrella, a painting of Phra Mahachanok, royal duties photographs, the 50th Anniversary of Accession to the Throne emblem, the 72nd Royal Birthday Anniversary emblem, and the royal cypher P.P.R., to be enshrined at the gable of the Ubosot, an act of immeasurable royal benevolence.
Architecturally, this temple represents Thai Buddhist art abroad, harmoniously blending with the Indian context. It features the prominent Phra Mahathat Chedi Chalermraj Sattha, a pagoda in the form of a rice cone, seamlessly combining Sukhothai and Indian art styles. Inside, it enshrines the Buddha's relics (Phra Borom Saririkatat), serving as a focal point of faith. There is also a beautiful Ubosot (ordination hall) in applied Thai art style, clearly reflecting Thai identity.
The atmosphere within the temple is a Buddhist forest garden, lush and tranquil, with plantings of historical Buddhist trees such as Sal trees and other shade-giving perennial trees. It is ideal for walking meditation (Chong Krom), sitting meditation, and contemplating the Dharma, especially during November – February, when the weather is cool and pleasant, suitable for pilgrimage and spiritual practice.
Beyond its religious role, the temple serves as a center for the Thai monastic community in Kushinagar and plays a significant role in public charity through projects like the Kusinara Clinic, educational support, and assistance to local communities. It also accommodates Thai pilgrims by providing lodging, food, and coordination, making visitors feel warm and as if they are in Thailand.
With its value in terms of religion, art, history, and Thai-Indian relations, Wat Thai Kusinara Chalermraj is an important destination for those following in the footsteps of the Buddha, to pay homage to the Buddha's relics, cultivate mindfulness, and profoundly reflect upon the Mahaparinirvana.
