“Ancient archaeological site linked to Lord Buddha’s life, including ruins of the palace, eastern gate of his renunciation, and nearby sacred Buddhist sites.”

Kapilvastu Ancient City (Tilaurakot) is an important archaeological and spiritual site believed to be the historical capital of the Sakya Kingdom, where Prince Siddhartha, later known as the Buddha, spent his early life until the age of 29. According to Buddhist texts, this is the city from which he renounced worldly life, departing through the eastern gate with his servant Chandaka and horse Kanthaka to begin his spiritual journey.

In 1899, archaeologists traced the possible location of the Ashokan Pillar and studied ancient urban planning legends, eventually identifying the ruins of an abandoned city named “Tilaurakot.” Its location corresponds with ancient texts, situated 16 km south of the Himalayan foothills, about 35 km west of Lumbini, and bordered by tributaries of the Ganges River to the west.

Excavations have confirmed that Tilaurakot was a flourishing city as early as 100 years before the Buddha’s time and continued to thrive until the end of the 7th century Buddhist Era before it was eventually abandoned. Its urban remnants include walls, gates, and structures that outline the city's historical significance.

The name Kapilvastu translates to “the dwelling place of the sage Kapila,” believed to be the original hermit who lived in the region. The Sakya clan later settled and established the city, naming it in honor of the sage Kapila. The area today remains a symbol of cultural heritage and spiritual significance.

Nearby, you can also visit other important locations such as the Stupa of King Suddhodana, believed to be the cremation site of Siddhartha’s father, and numerous monasteries including Thai Monastery and others built by Buddhist nations. Just a short distance away is Lumbini, the birthplace of the Buddha, which has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site and remains one of the holiest pilgrimage destinations for Buddhists around the world.
