“A shrine dedicated to the Looking-back Rabbit, symbolizing divine guidance, correct life paths, and success in study.”

Uji Shrine (Uji-jinja) is affectionately known as the “Lower Shrine” (Shimogosha) of Uji and offers a striking contrast to the nearby Ujikami Shrine, which emphasizes solemn antiquity and UNESCO World Heritage value. Uji Shrine, by comparison, is warm, approachable, and deeply rooted in local folklore, featuring symbolic rituals that invite direct participation from visitors.

The shrine is dedicated to Prince Uji no Wakiiratsuko, a historical imperial figure admired for his intelligence, virtue, and wisdom. Central to the shrine’s identity is the legend of the “Mikaeri Usagi” (Looking-back Rabbit). According to folklore, while the prince was traveling through dense forest toward Uji, he became lost. A rabbit appeared and guided him safely, repeatedly turning back to ensure the prince was following. From this story, the rabbit came to symbolize a divine messenger that guides people toward the correct path in life and decision-making.

Because Prince Uji no Wakiiratsuko was exceptionally well educated—and is regarded as one of the earliest Japanese figures to study advanced learning introduced by scholars from the Korean kingdom of Baekje—Uji Shrine developed a strong reputation as a power spot for academic success. Students frequently visit to pray for success in entrance examinations, studies, and intellectual growth, particularly before the Japanese school year begins in April.

Architecturally, the shrine’s Main Hall (Honden) dates to the early Kamakura period and is built in the Sangensha Nagare-zukuri style, distinguished by its elegant, flowing roofline. It is designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan, reflecting refined craftsmanship and the aesthetic values of medieval shrine architecture.

In front of the Honden stands the Haiden (Worship Hall), where visitors offer prayers. While more modest in scale, the Haiden harmonizes with the surrounding forested setting and serves as the spiritual focal point of the shrine. Its open structure allows worshippers to feel closely connected to the sacred space, reinforcing the shrine’s intimate and welcoming atmosphere.

One of the shrine’s most popular rituals is known as “Mikaeri Usagi San-mizu Meguri.” Visitors walk around the main hall three times while searching for three hidden rabbit statues. It is believed that completing this ritual helps wishes—especially those related to education and life direction—come true.

Uji Shrine is also renowned for its rabbit-themed charms and souvenirs, particularly the “Usagi Omikuji.” These small ceramic rabbit figures contain fortune slips inside and are often kept as lucky charms or left at the shrine as offerings, further emphasizing the rabbit’s role as a spiritual guide.
