“An ancient Shingon Buddhist temple set beside a river, blending deep spiritual heritage with the serene charm of traditional Japan.”

Shuzenji Temple, officially known as Fukuchizan Shuzenji, is a Shingon Buddhist temple founded in 807 AD by the monk Kukai (Kobo Daishi). With a history spanning more than 1,200 years, the temple is regarded as the spiritual and cultural origin of Shuzenji Onsen in Shizuoka Prefecture.

Nestled along the Katsura River and surrounded by lush hills, the temple is famous for its calm and refined scenery, earning Shuzenji the nickname “Little Kyoto of the Izu Peninsula.” One of its most distinctive features is the Dragon’s Mouth purification basin (Mizuya), where natural hot spring water flows directly from a dragon-shaped spout—an extremely rare sight in Japanese temples. The water is noticeably warm, reflecting its onsen origin.

At the entrance stands Kokei Bridge (Kokei-bashi | 虎渓橋), the iconic red bridge and a symbol of Shuzenji. It is the most prominent of the sacred bridges surrounding the temple area and a popular photo spot. Nearby walking paths lead visitors along the river and through traditional streets, reinforcing the town’s timeless atmosphere.

To the right of the main hall is the Homotsuden Museum, which houses wooden masks, ritual objects, and historical artifacts that illustrate the long religious and cultural history of Shuzenji and its surrounding community.
