“A turquoise glacial lake set at over 4,700 meters above sea level, Gokyo Lake is surrounded by Himalayan peaks and offers breathtaking views from the nearby Gokyo Ri summit.”

Gokyo Lake is a breathtaking glacial lake system situated in the Khumjung Village Development Committee of Solukhumbu District, within the Sagarmatha Zone in northeastern Nepal. Located inside the Sagarmatha National Park—a UNESCO World Heritage Site—the lake sits at an elevation of approximately 4,700 to 5,000 meters above sea level and reaches a depth of around 43 meters.

The nearby Gokyo Village, perched on the eastern shore at 4,790 meters (15,720 feet), serves as a central hub for trekkers exploring the Everest region. It takes about two days on foot to reach Gokyo from Namche Bazaar, making it a peaceful yet rewarding alternative to the traditional Everest Base Camp route.

Gokyo Lake and its surrounding resorts are named after the prominent peak Gokyo Ri (5,484 meters), which provides a spectacular panoramic viewpoint of Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, and Cho Oyu. The lake itself is regarded as one of the highest freshwater lake systems in the world and is renowned for its deep blue and turquoise hues.

In addition to its natural beauty, the lake is considered sacred by both Hindus and Buddhists. During the Janai Purnima festival in August, around 500 Hindu pilgrims bathe in its cold waters to seek blessings. This spiritual reverence helps preserve the purity and tranquility of the environment.

Each year, approximately 7,000 visitors journey to this remote sanctuary to admire the scenic landscapes, trek the pristine trails, and experience the spiritual energy that surrounds Gokyo Lake.
