“A serene spot reflecting sunlight like golden scales. Surrounded by mountains, walking paths and bridges offer peaceful views, inviting visitors to immerse themselves in nature.”

Kinrin Lake, or Kirinko, is a small but strikingly beautiful lake in the heart of Yufuin, known for its peaceful ambiance and scenic surroundings. Its name, meaning “golden scales,” originates from a story in 1884 when the scholar Miso Mori observed fish scales glinting gold in the evening sunlight. The lake is fed by both hot spring water and cold mountain streams, maintaining a slightly warm temperature throughout the year, which creates a unique environment for mist to form in cooler months.

During autumn and winter mornings, the warm water interacts with the cold air to produce thick, mystical fog over the lake. This phenomenon, best seen between 6:30 and 8:30 AM, creates a dreamlike landscape that is a highlight for photographers and nature enthusiasts.

The lake has a 400-meter walking path around its perimeter, allowing visitors to leisurely explore its surroundings while enjoying reflections of the trees and mountains on the water’s surface. Tensō Shrine, located along the lakeshore, features a partially submerged Torii gate, offering both a spiritual and picturesque focal point. Nearby, Shimon-yu Onsen provides outdoor hot spring pools where visitors can relax while taking in views of the lake, though a separate fee applies. A small waterfall flowing into the lake adds charm and a sense of natural vitality to the area. The combination of natural beauty, cultural landmarks, and accessible walking paths makes Kinrin Lake a must-visit destination in Yufuin.
