“A prestigious two-floor museum combining Buddhist treasures, tea ceremony art, and iconic modern works—set beside the tranquil waters of Ohori Park.”
Fukuoka Art Museum is one of Japan’s most respected regional art institutions, celebrated for its rare ability to bridge pre-modern Japanese culture with international contemporary art. Located within Ohori Park, the museum offers a calm, reflective atmosphere that enhances the viewing experience.
The museum is uniquely organized across two primary exhibition floors. The first floor focuses on pre-modern and Buddhist art, featuring the esteemed Matsunaga Collection of tea ceremony utensils and important cultural artifacts from the Kuroda Clan, the former feudal rulers of Fukuoka. A long-term display of Buddhist Art from Tokoin Temple, including imposing Buddha statues, further emphasizes the region’s deep spiritual heritage.
The second floor is dedicated to modern and contemporary art, showcasing internationally renowned artists such as Salvador Dalí, Joan Miró, Marc Chagall, and Andy Warhol. The museum is also a major center for Kyushu-born artists, with a strong emphasis on the avant-garde Kyushu-ha movement that challenged conventional postwar Japanese art.
Beyond its galleries, the museum’s outdoor deck features Yayoi Kusama’s iconic “Yellow Pumpkin,” a beloved landmark overlooking Ohori Park. Seasonal and special exhibitions regularly rotate, including large-scale international showcases and focused collection displays, ensuring that each visit offers something new.
