Kashiya Yokocho is located in Kawagoe’s historic “Little Edo” district. Dating back to the late Meiji and Taisho eras, the alley originally served as a production and distribution hub for “Dagashi” — affordable traditional snacks enjoyed by local children and residents. Today, it remains a preserved cultural area that reflects the nostalgic charm of old-town Japan.
Along the short stone-paved lane, approximately 20–25 small shops sell colorful candies, rice crackers, senbei, and various classic Japanese sweets. Kawagoe is especially famous for its sweet potatoes, and some of the most popular items here include sweet potato chips and sweet potato soft serve ice cream, both considered must-tries when visiting the alley.
The symbolic snack of the area is Fugashi, a long, fluffy brown sugar puff stick. Some sticks exceed 90 centimeters in length, making them popular for photos and souvenirs. However, they are quite fragile and can break easily. Many visitors prefer to purchase them as their final stop before leaving the alley to avoid carrying a long, delicate snack around all day.
Another unique highlight is the aroma that fills the air — the scent of caramelizing sugar and freshly baked sweets. This distinctive fragrance earned the alley recognition as one of Japan’s “100 Most Fragrant Landscapes,” making it a rare sensory travel experience beyond just sightseeing.
