“A limited-edition Chiikawa shop in Kawagoe’s historic Candy Alley, featuring prestigious Kameya dorayaki and exclusive sweet potato-themed goods available only at this location.”

Chiikawa Mogumogu Honpo (ちいかわもぐもぐ本舗 川越店) is a themed store that beautifully combines the world of Chiikawa with the nostalgic “Koedo” (Little Edo) atmosphere of Kawagoe. Opened in February 2025, the store centers around the concept of “mogumogu” (もぐもぐ), a Japanese onomatopoeia describing the act of happily munching or eating, while “honpo” (本舗) means “main shop” or “original store.”

The shop is located inside Kashiya Yokocho (Candy Alley), one of Kawagoe’s most famous historic lanes. This charming alley is lined with traditional sweet shops, where the aroma of nostalgic Japanese candies fills the air. The location perfectly complements the store’s food-focused theme, making the experience immersive and cohesive.

The design follows a “Retro Japanese Modern” concept, inspired by Kawagoe’s iconic Kurazukuri (traditional clay warehouse-style) architecture. The exterior harmonizes with the old-town wooden buildings, while the interior is filled with Chiikawa illustrations, playful hidden character details, and dedicated photo spots featuring rickshaws (jinrikisha). Fans can also find subtle Chiikawa motifs hidden on the exterior walls—perfect for “Easter egg” photo moments.

Since Kawagoe is famous for its sweet potatoes (satsumaimo), many exclusive items at this branch revolve around this theme, including:

  • Sweet potato costume plushies and mascots of Chiikawa characters

  • Rickshaw (Shafu) series keychains and mascots

  • Traditional-style goods such as mini lantern magnets, Inu-hariko-inspired charms, and retro tenugui towels

One of the biggest highlights is the Chiikawa-shaped dorayaki, produced in collaboration with the prestigious century-old local confectionery Kameya. These dorayaki are made in limited quantities daily and often come with a purchase limit per person (typically 2–3 per character) to prevent reselling. They frequently sell out by late morning.

Other recommended souvenirs include sweet potato cookies packaged in collectible tins, castella manju filled with sweet potato and chocolate, and a special sweet potato tea blend available exclusively at this branch.

Please note: this location is strictly a merchandise and souvenir food shop. There is no sit-down café area.

How to Get There

Kawagoe has three main stations:

  • Kawagoe Station (JR / Tobu Tojo Line) – most commonly used by visitors coming from Ikebukuro, Tokyo

  • Hon-Kawagoe Station (Seibu Line)

  • Kawagoe-shi Station (Tobu Line)

From Kawagoe Station, it is highly recommended to take the Koedo Loop Bus and get off at the “Fuda-no-Tsuji” stop. From there, it’s just a short walk to Candy Alley.

From Hon-Kawagoe Station, you can walk directly to the historic district and Candy Alley in about 20 minutes.
