Todaiji Chumon (Central Gate)

The Chumon is a vibrant vermilion gate situated directly in front of the Great Buddha Hall, marking the entrance to the inner sacred courtyard. Unlike the Nandaimon, this gate usually remains closed to the public, serving as a ceremonial barrier. Visitors typically access the main hall through a side corridor on the left. During special festivals or New Year's, a window at the top of the gate is opened, offering a glimpse of the Great Buddha's face from outside.
