The Great Buddha of Nara (Daibutsu)

The Daibutsu is the centerpiece of Todai-ji Temple, housed within the Daibutsuden. This colossal bronze statue represents Vairocana Buddha, the celestial Buddha who illuminates the universe. Standing at approximately 15 meters tall, it is one of the largest bronze statues in the world.

The figure is depicted in a seated meditation pose, with the right hand raised in the Abhaya Mudra (symbolizing protection and the dispelling of fear) and the left hand resting on the lap with the palm upward (symbolizing the granting of wishes). Behind the main figure rests a magnificent golden halo adorned with smaller images of Buddhas.

Though reconstructed several times due to fire and earthquakes, the Daibutsu remains a powerful symbol of peace and imperial authority, attracting millions of visitors who come to witness its spiritual presence and monumental scale.
