San Sung

The name San Sung, or High Shrine, originates from the physical characteristic of the shrine being situated on a large, significantly elevated laterite base. This laterite foundation consists of the walls and base of an ancient Khmer prasat from the Lavo period that remained unfinished in its original design. In the past, to worship Chao Pho Phra Kan, devotees had to climb high stairs to reach the top of the stone base where the deity was enshrined. Although a new applied Thai-style building now covers the original base, locals still call it San Sung out of familiarity and respect. This site serves as both a symbol of sacredness that resides above all else and one of the most significant architectural pieces of evidence in Lopburi.
