San Phra Kan, commonly referred to by locals as San Sung (High Shrine), is an ancient sanctuary housing the sacred statue of Chao Pho Phra Kan. The shrine sits on a massive laterite base, which archaeologists believe was the foundation of an unfinished ancient Khmer prasat. Inside, it enshrines a black deity figure resembling a four-armed Vishnu, though its head is an Ayutthaya-period sandstone Buddha head added later. This area is a famous gathering spot for many Lopburi monkeys that have lived alongside the local community for generations, celebrated annually with a Monkey Buffet. The shrine serves as the most important spiritual center for Lopburi residents, where people come to pray for prosperity, good fortune, and protection.
