“Experience the inverted pagoda shadow phenomenon visible inside the viharn (women are allowed to enter), pay respect to the golden Lanna-style Phra That Chom Ping stupa, and explore the museum of ancient artifacts discovered from the ancient Chom Ping settlement.”
Wat Phra That Chom Ping is one of Lampang’s most fascinating cultural and spiritual attractions. Located in Na Kaeo, Koh Kha, the temple is widely known for a rare optical phenomenon that combines religious belief with scientific principles.
The most remarkable feature is the “inverted shadow of the pagoda.” Inside the dark wooden viharn, sunlight passes through a tiny hole in the window panel. The light then projects an upside-down image of the golden pagoda onto a white cloth placed on the floor.
This phenomenon follows the principle of a pinhole camera (Camera Obscura), creating a clear inverted image of the stupa. Visitors can observe this unique effect throughout the day whenever sunlight is present. Unlike some temples where access is restricted, both men and women are allowed to enter the viharn and witness the phenomenon here.
Traces of Ancient History
The area surrounding the temple was once the site of the ancient “Chom Ping City,” believed to date back to the Hariphunchai period more than a thousand years ago.
The Phra That Chom Ping Chedi itself is a golden stupa built in a Lanna style influenced by Sukhothai architecture and enshrines sacred Buddhist relics. It has long been an important spiritual center for the local community.
Within the temple grounds, visitors can also explore a small museum displaying ancient artifacts discovered in the area, including:
-
Ancient pottery and ceramics
-
Old Buddha images
-
Historical objects from the ancient Chom Ping settlement
These artifacts provide insight into the rich cultural heritage and prosperity of the region in the past.
Peaceful Atmosphere in Na Kaeo
Wat Phra That Chom Ping offers a quiet and serene atmosphere, quite different from the busier temples in the province.
Visitors can stroll around the temple grounds, admire traditional Lanna wooden architecture, pay respect to the sacred pagoda, and learn about local history. The temple is therefore an ideal destination for those interested in culture, history, spirituality, and unique natural phenomena.
How to Get There
