“The park is a vast, well-preserved forest along the Thai–Lao border. It offers panoramic views of the mountains and the sea of mist from Hill 1408, the park’s highest peak. The park contains numerous beautiful waterfalls year-round, including Tat Hueng Waterfall, Khing Waterfall, Wang Tad Waterfall, and Chang Tok Waterfall. It also has historical significance as the site of the Ban Romkla Battlefield, with remnants of bunkers and other wartime structures visible on the peaks.”

Phu Suan Sai National Park covers an area of approximately 73,225 rai (117 square kilometers), encompassing the high mountain ranges in the northern part of Loei Province, which continue to the border with Laos, with the Hueang River serving as a natural boundary.

The park’s terrain consists of complex mountains with elevations ranging from 600 to 1,408 meters above sea level. The highest peak is Phu Suan Sai, or Hill 1408, which serves as an important viewpoint and a popular camping area for visitors.

Most of the forest within the park is evergreen hill forest, moist hill forest, and mixed deciduous forest, remaining lush and fertile throughout the year. The park is the source of several rivers, including the Phrae River, Hueang River, and Lek River. During the rainy season, the forest is vibrant and full of birdsong, while in winter, the cool air and fog often cover the mountaintops, creating a stunning sea of clouds.

In terms of biodiversity, the park is home to a wide variety of wildlife such as gaur, wild boars, and more than 240 bird species. Some birds are endemic, including the Silver-cheeked Woodpecker, Blue-naped Pitta, and Short-tailed Parrotbill, making it one of the most important birdwatching locations in northeastern Thailand. Rare reptiles such as the Himalayan mountain pit viper, Banded krait, and Big-headed Turtle are also found here. Additionally, the park is notable for the discovery of a new species of lichen, Pertusaria loeiensis, which is endemic to Loei Province.

The park features several remarkable natural attractions:

  • Hill 1408: The highest point in the park, offering panoramic views of sunrises, sunsets, and seas of clouds.

  • Hill 1255: A historical viewpoint featuring Phra Phuttharaksa and wartime military bunkers.

  • Tad Hueng Waterfall: A large waterfall that forms part of the Thai–Laos border.

  • Khing Waterfall: An easily accessible roadside waterfall ideal for relaxation and swimming.

  • Wang Tat and Chang Tok Waterfalls: Medium-sized waterfalls along the Phrae River that remain pristine and natural.

  • Phu Hua Hom Viewpoint: A popular camping site for enjoying the sea of clouds in winter.

Popular activities include trekking, nature study, birdwatching, camping, viewing the sea of clouds, and landscape photography. The park has nature trails maintained by the staff, suitable for both casual visitors and explorers wishing to stay overnight in the forest.

The park’s climate is cool and comfortable throughout the year, with average temperatures around 20–25°C. In winter, temperatures may drop to 5–10°C. The best period for visiting is from July to February, when the natural scenery is at its most beautiful and the weather is pleasant.
