Namiyoke Inari Shrine is a small yet culturally rich Shinto shrine located beside the vibrant Tsukiji Outer Market. Despite its modest size, the shrine radiates a distinctive charm, blending spiritual tranquility with the lively rhythm of the surrounding market. As visitors pass through the torii gate, they are greeted by two massive guardian lion heads (Shishi)—“Suiten-maru” (red) and “Ohaguro-shishi” (black)—believed to ward off evil and protect the area. One of the shrine’s most celebrated events is the Tsukiji Shishi Matsuri, held every June, featuring grand lion dances and vibrant processions that bring the entire district to life.

The shrine’s origins date back to the aftermath of the Great Fire of Meireki in 1657. Under the orders of Tokugawa Ietsuna, land reclamation began along the Tsukiji waterfront. However, repeated failures occurred as strong waves destroyed the embankments. According to legend, a mysterious glowing object appeared on the sea, believed to be a divine manifestation of the Inari deity. After enshrining it and performing rituals, the winds and waves miraculously calmed, allowing construction to succeed. The name “Namiyoke” literally means “Protection from Waves,” symbolizing its enduring role as a guardian against natural forces.

Following the Great Kantō Earthquake in 1923, the Tsukiji Fish Market was relocated to this area, and the shrine naturally became the spiritual guardian of traders and merchants. A particularly unique feature is the collection of memorial mounds known as “Tsuka,” donated by market guilds. Among them, the Egg Mound (玉子塚 / Tamago Tsuka) stands out as a tribute to eggs—an essential ingredient in Japanese cuisine, especially in tamagoyaki and sushi. Other mounds, such as those dedicated to sushi, kuruma ebi (tiger prawns), and anglerfish, reflect a deep sense of gratitude and spiritual respect for the lives that sustain the culinary culture of Tsukiji.
