“A serene mountain village surrounded by nature, clear streams, riverside homestays, and cozy cafes, perfect for a slow-life retreat.”

Ban Mae Lai is a small village nestled in the mountains of Huai Kaeo Sub-district, Mae On District, Chiang Mai Province, located just about 5-6 kilometers from  Ban Mae Kampong. Although it lies along the same tourist route, Ban Mae Lai has well-preserved its simplicity and traditional community way of life. It is therefore dubbed "Mae Kampong's twin village" or "Mae Kampong of yesteryear," as it attracts fewer tourists, offers a tranquil atmosphere, and allows for a closer connection with nature.

The topography of Ban Mae Lai features complex, interlocking mountains, with the Mae Lai stream flowing through the village year-round, making the area moist and fertile. The surrounding forest is a pristine watershed area, abundant with large trees, ferns, moss, and local plants, contributing to a consistently cool climate throughout the year. Especially during the rainy and cold seasons, morning fogs blanket the village, creating a peaceful and ideal atmosphere for relaxation.

The lifestyle of Ban Mae Lai locals remains intertwined with nature and high-altitude agriculture. Their main occupations include cultivating Arabica coffee, tea, miang (fermented tea leaves), and some winter crops. Coffee cultivation in the area relies on the shade of forest trees, following conservation agriculture principles (Shade-grown Coffee), which helps preserve the biodiversity of the watershed forest and results in high-quality coffee beans. Tourists can sample freshly roasted coffee from local produce and chat with farm owners and local entrepreneurs at several shops.

Ban Mae Lai boasts distinctive accommodations designed to harmonize with nature, including homestays, wooden houses by the stream, minimalist-style rooms, forest cabins, as well as camping and glamping options. Many are built along the stream, allowing guests to open their windows to the sound of flowing water all night. Tourists often choose to stay here to experience the slow-life atmosphere, wake up to coffee on the balcony, admire the morning mist, and leisurely stroll through the village.

Beyond accommodations, Ban Mae Lai also features cafes renowned for their architecture and design that blend with nature. Examples include Utsa Chong Tee Ban (อุตสาชงที่บ้าน), which uses locally sourced coffee beans as its primary ingredient, Taryn Tara Cafe & Stay, notable for its stream views and green spaces, as well as many small local coffee shops that offer tourists a chance to experience the charm of local coffee and traditional snacks.

Given its proximity to major attractions, Ban Mae Lai offers convenient connectivity for tours. Nearby destinations include Wat Kantha Phrueksa or Wat Mae Kampong, Tin Tok Royal Project Development Center, Rung Arun Hot Spring, San Kamphaeng Hot Spring, The Giant Chiangmai, and Ban Mae Kampong which are all within a short travel distance. Tourists can plan a One Day Trip or stay 1-2 nights to fully experience the ambiance of both villages.

Another charm of Ban Mae Lai is its community-based tourism. Visitors will find traditional Lanna-style wooden houses, small local shops, and a simple way of life. The community emphasizes the conservation of watershed forests, natural resource management, and sustainable tourism, ensuring the village remains clean, shady, and avoids commercial development that would erode its unique identity.

During the rainy season, from June to October, Ban Mae Lai is vibrant with lush greenery, and the stream has a high water volume, perfect for nature photography enthusiasts. The cool season, between November and February, offers pleasant weather with opportunities to see sea mist in the mornings, and temperatures can drop below 15 degrees Celsius, making it the most popular period for stays.

Ban Mae Lai is also a popular destination for cafe-hoppers and photography enthusiasts, offering picturesque spots year-round, including riverside views, wooden bridges, Lanna-style wooden houses, and mountain vistas. Mornings, in particular, with soft sunlight filtering through trees and mist, are ideal for nature photography. Evenings allow for peaceful strolls, listening to the flowing water, and observing the local way of life.

What distinguishes Ban Mae Lai from other mountain destinations is its balance between tourism and nature conservation. Visitors will hear the sound of the stream instead of car engines, breathe pure air from the watershed forest, and truly unwind. It is ideal for those seeking to escape the chaos of the big city, whether couples, groups of friends, families, or solo travelers. Ban Mae Lai beautifully reflects the charm of nature-based and community tourism in Chiang Mai Province.
