“Admire the iconic red Futami Suspension Bridge, Meoto Iwa rocks, and Kappa Daio statue, enhanced by autumn foliage lights and winter candle events along the Toyohira River.”

Jozankei Futami Park is located in the very center of Jozankei Onsen Town and is a compact yet atmospheric park that beautifully blends natural scenery, local legends, and romantic symbolism.

The park’s most recognizable landmark is the red Futami Suspension Bridge, which spans the Toyohira River and offers panoramic views of the surrounding gorge and forests. During autumn, the mountains on both sides of the river turn vivid shades of red, orange, and gold, creating one of Jozankei’s most iconic seasonal landscapes.

From the bridge area, visitors can observe Futami Iwa (Meoto Iwa / Wedding Rocks)—two large rock formations along the riverbank. Unlike the famous seaside Meoto Iwa in Mie Prefecture, these rocks resemble natural cliff faces and are partially hidden by trees, making them easy to overlook. They were named by Isezo Sato, the founder of Jozankei Onsen, in honor of his hometown. Futami Iwa symbolizes enduring love, harmony, and prosperity, making it a popular photo spot for couples.

The park is also deeply connected to Kappa folklore, a well-known part of Japanese local mythology. The friendly yet mysterious Kappa Daio (Kappa King) statue adds charm to the walking experience. Jozankei Futami Park serves as the starting point of the Futami–Jozankei Walking Trail, an easy and scenic path that leads along the river to Kappa Pool (Kappabuchi) and the Kappa Shrine, offering beautiful photo opportunities throughout the walk.

Seasonal Highlights:

  • Autumn: The surrounding gorges explode in vibrant reds, oranges, and golds, making it one of Sapporo's most celebrated autumn foliage spots. Evening illuminations enhance the magical atmosphere.

  • Winter: A candle light event transforms the snow-covered park into a tranquil winter wonderland.

  • Spring & Summer: Lush greenery, crisp mountain air, and the soothing sounds of the river make the park a refreshing retreat from the city heat.

How to Get There
  • By bus: Take a bus from central Sapporo to Jozankei Onsen. From the bus stop in town, the park is within easy walking distance.
