Kawagoe Hikawa Shrine is an ancient Shinto shrine with a history spanning over 1,500 years, located in Kawagoe City, Saitama Prefecture—an area famously known as “Little Edo” for its well-preserved Edo-period atmosphere. It is widely revered as one of Japan’s most powerful Enmusubi shrines, believed to bring blessings for love, marriage, and harmonious relationships.

The shrine enshrines five deities who are all members of the same divine family, including two married couples. This unique divine lineage has made the shrine especially popular among visitors seeking blessings for romance, marriage, family harmony, and meaningful connections.

Must-See Highlights:

• Ema Tunnel:
  A wooden corridor lined with over 30,000 ema (wooden prayer plaques), forming a stunning tunnel filled with wishes and heartfelt prayers. It is one of the most photogenic and symbolic spots within the shrine.

• Tai Fortune (Tai Omikuji):
  A unique fortune-telling ritual where visitors use a small wooden fishing rod to “catch” a paper sea bream. Red symbolizes general good fortune, while pink represents love and relationships.

• Wind Chime Festival:
  Held during the summer months (July–September), the shrine is decorated with more than 2,000 colorful wind chimes. Their gentle sounds create a refreshing atmosphere while carrying visitors’ wishes to the gods.

• Sacred Rituals and Stones:
  Visitors can participate in Hitogata Nagashi, a purification ritual involving floating paper dolls to cleanse misfortune, and gently rub the dog-shaped stone to pray for safe childbirth and good health.

• From Kawagoe Station (JR Line / Tobu Tojo Line):
  Take the Koedo Loop Bus and get off at “Hikawa Shrine” bus stop. The shrine entrance is just a short walk away.

• From Hon-Kawagoe Station:
  Access by local bus or taxi, approximately 10–15 minutes.

• Enmusubi-dama Lucky Stones:
  Only 20 stones are distributed for free each day. Visitors wishing to receive one should arrive early, around 5:00–6:00 AM.

• Best Time for Photos:
  Weekday mornings are ideal for photography, especially at the Ema Tunnel, as it is quieter and more peaceful.

• Seasonal Preparation:
  During the summer Wind Chime Festival, the weather can be hot and humid. Bringing water and sun protection is recommended.
