“The final stop of Shuzenji’s “Bridges of Love,” a literary landmark, and a magical firefly-viewing spot during early summer.”
Akagaeru Park is a small yet meaningful park located at the western edge of the Shuzenji Onsen district. It blends natural serenity, romantic symbolism, and Japanese literary heritage, making it a quiet but essential stop for travelers exploring Shuzenji on foot.
The park is named after “Akagaeru (The Red Frog),” the final short story by renowned novelist Shimaki Kensaku. In 1944, while undergoing medical treatment in Shuzenji, Kensaku observed an Akagaeru (Japanese Brown Frog – Rana japonica)—a frog with a reddish-brown or rust-colored body—struggling to cross a stream along the Katsura River. This humble scene inspired a deeply reflective work on perseverance, fragility, and life itself. A stone monument within the park commemorates this literary masterpiece, attracting readers and scholars alike.
For many visitors, Akagaeru Park is especially significant as the endpoint of Shuzenji’s famous romantic walking route known as the “Bridges of Love.” Five red bridges cross the Katsura River, each symbolizing a different wish related to love and relationships. The Takishita Bridge, located directly beside the park, represents “Guardian Love” or “Continuing Love.” Couples often complete the ritual by crossing all five bridges, believing it brings good fortune and lasting relationships.
The park is most enchanting from late May to mid-June, when it hosts the firefly season. During this period, an official local event called “Hotaru no Yube” (Evening of Fireflies) takes place. Soft lanterns are gently placed along the paths to guide visitors without disturbing the fireflies, allowing guests to witness Genji-botaru fireflies glowing above the biotope and the Katsura River in a calm, dreamlike atmosphere. The park also connects naturally with the nearby Bamboo Forest Path (Chikurin no Komichi), making it a perfect final stop on a scenic walk.
