Architectural Structure
  • Material: The columns are typically made of Japanese Cypress (Hinoki), chosen for its durability and straight grain.

  • Entasis: The pillars often feature a slight convex curve (entasis), a technique used to prevent the visual illusion of the columns sagging and to give them a sense of strength.

  • Vermilion Lacquer: The striking red color comes from mercury-based cinnabar lacquer, which serves a dual purpose: it symbolizes life and protection against evil, and it acts as a preservative for the wood against moisture and insects.

  • Bracket Sets (Tokyo): At the top of these poles are complex interlocking wooden brackets that support the heavy tiled roof without the need for nails, distributing the weight evenly down the columns.
