“Pay respect to the sacred Buddha relics enshrined within the Twin Royal Pagodas, and admire the beautifully manicured gardens and the sea of mist over Doi Inthanon in a serene and well-organized atmosphere.”

Phra Maha That Naphamethanidon and Phra Maha That Naphaphonphumisiri are sacred monuments built by the Royal Thai Air Force in collaboration with the Thai people. They were established as a royal merit-making tribute to King Bhumibol Adulyadej the Great (Rama IX) and Queen Sirikit, the Queen Mother, on the auspicious occasion of their respective 60th birthdays (5th cycle). Situated near the Top of Doi Inthanon amidst cool temperatures and vast landscapes, these pagodas serve as a symbol of loyalty and a major spiritual landmark of Chiang Mai Province.

Phra Maha That Naphamethanidon, meaning "The Pagoda established grandly in the sky and the strength of the land," was the first to be constructed in 1987. It is an octagonal-shaped pagoda in a brownish-purple hue, symbolizing the Noble Eightfold Path. The summit enshrines sacred Buddha relics, while the interior houses a meticulously carved green granite Buddha statue in the blessing posture. The architecture is designed for durability against the harsh high-altitude climate while perfectly maintaining the elegance of contemporary Thai Buddhist art.

Subsequently, in 1992, Phra Maha That Naphaphonphumisiri was built alongside it. Its name translates to "The strength of the sky and the glory of the land." This pagoda stands out with its purplish-pink color and a twelve-sided structure adorned with beautiful glazed tiles. Inside, it enshrines Buddha relics and an exquisite Buddha statue carved from white jade in the contemplative posture. The surrounding landscape features diverse species of cold-climate flowers that are delicately maintained, making this area a top-tier destination for spiritual relaxation and landscape photography in the country.

The primary charm of visiting these Twin Royal Pagodas is the experience of a peaceful and strictly disciplined environment. The temple and officials prioritize cleanliness and systematic area management to preserve the sanctity and the beauty of the vistas. Visitors will find inner peace while walking through the gardens enveloped in light mist, overlooking endless mountain ranges. It is an experience that perfectly combines religious faith with the natural beauty of the environment.

These two pagodas are more than just beautiful architecture on a mountain peak; they are a testament to the love and bond between the Monarchy and the Thai people. Visiting this site allows for the study of history and refined artistry, while also providing inspiration through the Dhamma principles hidden within the architecture. Visitors can capture lasting impressions of the highest peak in Thailand.
