“Admire the massive "Banyan Tree Groves" (Nikrot trees) that give the temple its name, and pay respects at the "Chao Pho Thep Shrine," a sacred site built with laterite on the foundations of an ancient Khmer-style prang.”

Nikrot Temple, with the word “Nikrot” meaning banyan tree, is an ancient temple with no clear historical record of its founding. However, archaeological surveys of laterite prang bases, ancient artifacts, and site layouts suggest that it once served as an important religious sanctuary during the Lopburi period under strong Khmer influence. Over time, the site lost its significance and was eventually abandoned. Today, Nikrot Temple has been officially registered as a National Ancient Monument by the Fine Arts Department of Thailand.

What makes Nikrot Temple well known among locals is its historical legends and oral traditions, which recount that the site was once used as an execution ground for important figures or political prisoners during the political turmoil following the reign of King Narai the Great. These stories contribute to the temple’s solemn, mysterious, and awe-inspiring atmosphere, setting it apart from ordinary temples.

Within the temple grounds, visitors can still see the ruins of laterite prangs and structures, now intertwined with the massive roots of ancient banyan trees. These roots creep along the walls and foundations, creating a powerful visual image of nature reclaiming history and blending seamlessly with the remnants of the past.

At the heart of the site stands the Shrine of Chao Pho Thep, which was originally a wooden structure before being reconstructed in laterite in 1934 by the Royal Thai Army Engineering Department. It is believed that Chao Pho Thep was once enshrined within one of the ancient prangs of Nikrot Temple and has long been revered by local residents, especially for seeking protection, safety, and spiritual guardianship.

For history enthusiasts, photographers, and travelers seeking unseen and atmospheric destinations, Nikrot Temple is a remarkable place to explore. Although located not far from Tong Pu Temple, it feels secluded and disconnected from the outside world. The site offers an ideal setting to study ancient laterite architecture and to immerse oneself in historical narratives that are rarely found in mainstream tourist attractions.
