Khob Dong Viewpoint (Khob Dong Viewpoint) is one of the most famous and popular sea-of-mist viewpoints on Doi Ang Khang, Chiang Mai Province. Located in front of Khob Dong Village on a high mountain ridge at an elevation of approximately 1,400–1,500 meters above sea level, the viewpoint offers expansive panoramic views of layered mountain ranges and vast valleys. During the early morning, a blanket of soft white mist covers the valleys below, creating breathtaking scenery that attracts travelers and photographers from across the country.

The name “Khob Dong” originates from the area's geographical features. The surrounding mountain ridges encircle a deep valley whose shape resembles a traditional woven bamboo tray known as a “Kradong,” giving rise to the name of both the village and the viewpoint. The surrounding area is home to the Black Lahu (Lahu) ethnic community, who continue to preserve their traditional culture, customs, and way of life. Visiting this destination offers not only natural beauty but also a valuable opportunity to learn about the unique lifestyle of a highland community.

In the past, the Doi Ang Khang and Khob Dong areas were known for opium cultivation and shifting agriculture. Later, through the royal initiative of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej The Great (Rama IX), the Ang Khang Royal Project was established to promote sustainable agricultural occupations for local villagers. As a result, the community developed stable livelihoods while preserving natural resources and watershed forests, transforming the area into a nationally recognized model for highland development.

One of the most outstanding features of Khob Dong Viewpoint is its panoramic landscape overlooking the mountain ranges that extend along the Thailand–Myanmar border. On clear days, visitors can enjoy spectacular views of the border mountains. During sunrise, golden sunlight gradually illuminates the mountains and sea of mist, creating scenery that resembles a natural masterpiece. Many visitors arrive before dawn specifically to witness and photograph this unforgettable moment.

Another unique attraction that distinguishes Khob Dong Viewpoint from other viewpoints on Doi Ang Khang is the “Khob Dong Young Local Guides.” These young Black Lahu children dress in traditional ethnic attire and warmly welcome visitors in the early morning. They introduce the village, share its history, recommend photography spots, and create a friendly atmosphere for travelers. Their hospitality has become one of the most memorable experiences for many visitors.

Along the viewpoint area, small community stalls operated by local residents offer traditional foods and hot beverages such as Khao Nook Nga (sticky rice mixed with sesame), roasted sweet potatoes, grilled corn, hot tea, fresh coffee, and locally produced agricultural products. These warm refreshments are especially enjoyable during the cold morning hours. Visitors can also walk into Khob Dong Village to explore earthen houses, traditional handicrafts, and locally made products, gaining a deeper understanding of the simple and sustainable lifestyle of the Lahu people.

Although the period from November to February is considered the most popular season for visiting due to the cool weather and dense sea of mist, Khob Dong Viewpoint can be enjoyed throughout the year. During the rainy season from June to October, visitors can admire lush green mountains and beautiful post-rain mist. In the summer months, temperatures remain cooler than in the lowlands, making it an excellent destination for relaxation amidst peaceful natural surroundings.

In addition to enjoying the viewpoint itself, visitors can easily continue their journey to other major attractions on Doi Ang Khang, including No Lae Village, No Lae Military Base, Tea Plantation 2000, Ang Khang Royal Agricultural Station, Mon Son Viewpoint, Ang Khang Bonsai Garden, and the Ang Khang Maple Garden. These destinations can conveniently be explored within the same day, making the area one of the most comprehensive tourism zones on Doi Ang Khang.

• By Private Car: From Ang Khang Royal Agricultural Station, follow the signs toward Khob Dong Village and No Lae Village. The route follows a paved mountain ridge road with several narrow and steep sections. Drive carefully. The journey takes approximately 10 minutes to reach the parking area near the viewpoint.

• By Public Transportation: Visitors can hire a white songthaew (shared pickup truck taxi) or local sightseeing vehicle operating on Doi Ang Khang. Advance arrangements are recommended for early-morning transportation to the viewpoint for sunrise and sea-of-mist viewing.

• Arrive between 05:30–07:00 AM for the best sea-of-mist and sunrise experience.

• Bring warm clothing, a hat, and gloves, especially from November to February when temperatures may drop below 10°C.

• Consider giving a small gratuity to the young local guides to support educational and community activities.

• Exercise caution near the cliff edge and on potentially slippery surfaces caused by morning dew.
