“Kyoto’s premier Zen temple featuring an original 14th-century garden with borrowed mountain scenery, a dramatic cloud dragon ceiling painting, Michelin-recognized Zen vegetarian cuisine, and direct access to the Arashiyama Bamboo Grove.”

Tenryu-ji Temple is one of the 17 UNESCO World Heritage Sites of Kyoto and holds the prestigious position of Rank No.1 among the Five Great Zen Temples of Kyoto (Kyoto Gozan). The temple was founded in 1339 by Shogun Ashikaga Takauji to appease the spirit of Emperor Go-Daigo, with the renowned Zen master Muso Soseki appointed as its first abbot. Although many of the buildings were lost to fires over the centuries, the temple’s spiritual essence and historic landscape remain remarkably intact.

The heart of Tenryu-ji is the Sogenchi Garden, a rare Zen garden that has survived largely unchanged for over 700 years. Designed by Muso Soseki, the garden masterfully employs Shakkei (Borrowed Scenery), incorporating not only the Arashiyama mountains but also Mount Kameyama into its background. This technique creates a sense of vastness and depth that far exceeds the garden’s physical boundaries, perfectly embodying Zen harmony between nature and human perception.

Inside the Hatto (Dharma Hall) is the awe-inspiring Unryu-zu (Cloud Dragon Painting) on the ceiling. The current painting was recreated in 1997 by celebrated Japanese artist Kayama Matazo to commemorate the 650th anniversary of Muso Soseki, replacing the original artwork that had deteriorated over time. Wherever visitors stand, the dragon’s eyes appear to follow them, symbolizing awakening and omnipresent awareness in Zen philosophy.
Note: The Hatto is open only on weekends, national holidays, and special seasonal periods.

Within the temple grounds is Shigetsu, a highly respected restaurant serving traditional Shojin Ryori (Zen Buddhist vegetarian cuisine). Awarded the Michelin Bib Gourmand, dining here is considered a cultural experience in itself. Reservations are strongly recommended.

Visitors should note that the garden paths and the temple hall corridors require separate tickets. Those wishing to experience the traditional wooden architecture and elevated views overlooking the garden must purchase an additional ticket to enter the halls.

A major advantage of Tenryu-ji is its North Gate, which opens directly into the Arashiyama Bamboo Grove, making it the most seamless and popular route for exploring the area.
