“Its vivid cobalt-blue, 98°C, 200-meter-deep hot spring is designated a National Place of Scenic Beauty.”

Umi Jigoku—literally “Sea Hell”—is the most visually captivating of Beppu’s famed Seven Hells (Jigoku Meguri), a collection of extraordinary hot springs created by intense geothermal activity. Although its water resembles a calm tropical lagoon, the pool boils at around 98°C (208°F). The cobalt-blue color comes from iron sulfate, and early morning steam creates an ethereal, otherworldly scene. The pond is also believed to reach an impressive depth of approximately 200 meters, emphasizing the massive geothermal forces beneath Beppu.

Recognized as a National Place of Scenic Beauty, the site features more than just its main pool. A geothermal greenhouse displays rare tropical plants, including Giant Amazonian Water Lilies that grow exceptionally large during the warm season. A free Ashiyu (foot bath) near the entrance offers visitors a way to safely enjoy the thermal waters. Local favorites like Onsen Tamago and Volcanic Steam Pudding are cooked using natural steam vents. A path lined with bright red torii gates leads to Hakuryu Inari Daijin, adding cultural depth and beautiful photography opportunities. Umi Jigoku also uses its geothermal heat to produce natural bath salts, available in the gift shop.

Note: Yama Jigoku is no longer part of the official combo ticket. It remains a private attraction with a mini-zoo (capybaras, hippos, flamingos) and requires a separate ticket.
