“A dramatic, naturally red hot spring with over 1,300 years of history and officially designated as a National Place of Scenic Beauty.”
Chinoike Jigoku is one of Beppu’s most extraordinary geothermal attractions, renowned for its vivid red waters that resemble a pool of molten lava. The striking color comes from high concentrations of iron oxide and magnesium oxide found in the underground clay, giving the pond its unforgettable "blood-like" appearance. As one of Japan’s oldest documented natural hells—dating back more than 1,300 years—it holds deep cultural and geological significance.
Although temperatures reach around 78°C (172°F), making bathing impossible, visitors can enjoy cooled footbaths on-site while appreciating the landscape shaped by Beppu’s volcanic activity. The area also preserves traditional medicinal practices; the red clay has long been used in healing ointments, and the famous Chinoikenanko cream remains a popular local specialty. Surrounded by greenery that enhances its dramatic colors, Chinoike Jigoku is a must-see for photographers and travelers seeking one of Kyushu’s most visually unique natural wonders.
