“Witness the tranquil, milky-white pond and explore a tropical fish aquarium warmed by natural geothermal heat.”
Shiraike Jigoku, also known as the “White Pond Hell,” presents a striking contrast to the more vivid hot springs of Beppu. Its waters are pale, milky-white, created through a natural chemical reaction. As the hot spring water, rich in silicic acid and calcium bicarbonate, gushes from the ground, it is clear. Once it reaches the pond and cools upon exposure to air, the minerals solidify, producing the distinctive ethereal color.
The pond is extremely hot, reaching temperatures around 95°C (203°F), and is strictly for viewing purposes. Visitors are advised to keep a safe distance, as touching the water can be dangerous. The site exudes a peaceful atmosphere, enhanced by its location within a meticulously maintained traditional Japanese garden. Lush greenery, stone pagodas, and winding paths create a meditative environment perfect for relaxation and contemplation.
A particularly unique attraction at Shiraike Jigoku is the tropical fish aquarium. Utilizing the natural geothermal heat from the hot springs, this small facility maintains the ideal water temperature for exotic species, including the enormous freshwater Pirarucu and the sometimes-feared Piranhas. This creative use of geothermal energy adds an unexpected and memorable element to the visit.
Shiraike Jigoku is officially designated a National Place of Scenic Beauty in Japan, alongside Chinoike Jigoku. Many visitors combine it with the other Hells of Beppu, for which a joint pass is available, making it more convenient and cost-effective to explore multiple sites.
