“Experience a spectacular geyser that erupts every 30–40 minutes, shooting water and steam up to 50 meters high.”
Tatsumaki Jigoku is a designated National Scenic Area and a key attraction in Beppu, Oita Prefecture. Unlike most other "Hells," which feature colorful boiling ponds, Tatsumaki Jigoku showcases a dynamic geyser that erupts at regular, predictable intervals. The geyser typically erupts every 30 to 40 minutes, with the spout of water lasting about 4 to 6 minutes. Staff usually announce the estimated next eruption time, as the interval can vary slightly.
The water at the vent reaches approximately 105°C (221°F), above the boiling point due to pressure, and if unrestricted, the geyser could shoot water and steam up to 30–50 meters (100–160 feet) high. For visitor safety, a stone canopy moderates the height_, yet the display of geothermal power remains awe-inspiring. The name "Tatsumaki" (Tornado/Waterspout) comes from the violent, swirling motion of the water and steam during the peak of the eruption.
The site is conveniently located next to Chinoike Jigoku (Blood Pond Hell), allowing visitors to easily experience both in one visit. While waiting for the geyser, guests can enjoy local treats such as gelato and fruit juices made from ingredients sourced in the Oita region, making the visit both exciting and tasty.
